Redmi has unveiled its new TWS earbuds, the Buds 7S. The ‘S’ in the name indicates the Chinese version, while the global version, known as Redmi Buds 6 Active, features the ‘Active’ prefix. Here are the main changes compared to the Redmi Buds 6S: a new sound system with a 12.4mm dynamic driver and a 5mm piezoceramic driver. It also includes Bluetooth version 5.4, an upgrade from 5.3. New features include personalized noise cancellation tailored to the ear canal and single earpiece noise cancellation. The battery life for the wireless earbuds has slightly decreased: they now offer 6.5 hours of playtime, with a total of 32 hours when using the charging case. Previously, it was 7 hours for the earbuds and 33 hours with the case.
The Redmi Buds 7S Bluetooth earbuds have upgraded their sound system. Instead of a 14.2mm dynamic driver, Redmi has included a 12.4mm titanium-coated dynamic driver and a 5mm piezoelectric ceramic driver. This same sound system is also used in the Redmi Buds 6. I recommend checking out an earbud review and comparison of the entire Buds 6 series. The supported codecs remain the same: SBC and AAC.

Adaptive noise cancellation mode is supported – the system learns the surrounding noise and selects the optimal setting. The manufacturer also promises personalized noise cancellation based on the ear canal of each user. We anticipate that this personalized noise cancellation will function similarly to the ‘Golden Hearing Profile’ feature found in some other earbuds, where customizing the audible frequency range enhances the effectiveness of the noise cancellation. We’ll have a better idea after testing, so please leave comments if you’re interested in a review of these earbuds. A nice bonus is that the noise-canceling feature can work with a single earbud. Typically, active noise cancellation only works with both earbuds. For calls, the same two microphones with software for noise processing and wind blocking up to 9 m/s are used.
The Xiaomi Earbuds app for Android and iOS is available for the Redmi Buds 7S wireless earbuds. The app offers EQ customization and ready-made presets. It also features a Sound ID function that learns users’ musical tastes and automatically tunes the best settings. Other features include surround sound and a function to help find lost earbuds, among others. However, some features, specifically Sound ID and the ability to take photos and videos by touching the earpiece, only work with Xiaomi and Redmi phones.

The Bluetooth version has been updated from 5.3 to 5.4. You can connect the earbuds to two devices, like a phone and a laptop, or a phone and a tablet. You can also connect two pairs of earbuds to your phone or PC to share audio. The earbuds are IP54 rated for dust and moisture resistance, but the case doesn’t have a protection rating. Unfortunately, the battery life has been reduced: the earbuds now last for 6.5 hours (a decrease of 30 minutes), and the case provides a total of 32 hours (down by an hour). Charging the earbuds in the case for 10 minutes will give you 2 hours of music playback. For comparison, the Redmi Buds 6S offered 2 hours of playtime on just a 5-minute charge. On a positive note, the LED charging indicator is now more informative, showing the approximate charge level: 4 lights indicate 100%, 3 lights for 50-75%, 2 lights for 25-50%, and 1 light means 25% or less.

The changes in the appearance of the earbuds are minimal – they now have a more streamlined shape. The color options for the Chinese version include white, light blue, and black. The color options for the global version may vary. The global release date isn’t yet known, but it’s expected that sales will begin by the end of April or in early May.
