Juzear, in collaboration with KOTO — a well-known name in Japan’s audiophile industry — has released the in-ear Nebula: a hybrid with five drivers per channel. The brand claims a focus on vocals and a spacious soundstage. The multi-driver “stuffing” pitch looks ambitious, but five emitters in one shell aren’t finished sound yet — they’re a blending job that the crossover has to solve. What’s actually inside, and what of it is verifiable, is below — without the marketing.
What’s Most Interesting in the Juzear × KOTO
- Five drivers per channel: a stated layout of 1 dynamic + 3 balanced armature (BA) + 1 micro-planar.
- Driver roles (per the brand): the dynamic covers the lows, three armatures the mids and upper mids, the micro-planar the highs.
- 4-way crossover: a claimed electronic split plus four independent acoustic tubes.
- Detachable cable: silver-plated 6N OCC with 400 strands and swappable 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm plugs.
- Specs: 32 Ohm impedance, 110±1 dB sensitivity, 20 Hz – 20 kHz range, 26 dB isolation.
Drivers. The layout is stated as a hybrid: one dynamic driver with a multi-layer amorphous carbon composite diaphragm (the brand calls it MACCD), three balanced armatures, and one micro-planar. The brand assigns each type to its own band — the dynamic for bass, the armatures for the mids, the planar for the highs. “Five drivers” on its own doesn’t mean “better than two”: the more emitters there are, the harder it is to blend them into a coherent frequency response without dips and overlaps at the band transitions. How evenly that’s done will be shown by measurement and listening, not by a number on the box.
Numbers. Impedance 32 Ohm, sensitivity 110±1 dB, range 20 Hz – 20 kHz, isolation 26 dB. Low resistance and high sensitivity on paper mean an easy load for the source, but the real loudness from a phone without an amp will be shown by testing. The 20 Hz – 20 kHz line is a standard spec-sheet entry that says nothing about timbre and balance; it’s a frame, not a description of the sound.
Cable and Connection. A 2-pin 0.78 mm connector means the cable is detachable and can be replaced. Included, per the claim, is a silver-plated 6N OCC cable with 400 strands and swappable 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm plugs: one for a phone and regular sources, the other for a balanced output. For a hybrid, a detachable cable with two plugs out of the box is a nice touch, though the effect of swapping cables on the final sound still has to be checked separately.
