There are two methods to disable headphones on your Android phone – programming or physical. Initially, you should attempt to fix the issue programmatically by following the first six steps, then move on to physical solutions, outlined in points 7-9. If you are certain the connector is dirty, or if the phone has been immersed in water or snow, proceed straight to step 7.
What does the phone screen’s headphone mode signify? If you see a headphone icon and do not hear any sound, this means that your phone thinks that there are wired headphones connected, even when there are none. This may result in no sound being heard during calls or you might not be heard during the call. In addition, if the headphone icon appears on your phone, it means that the speaker for listening to music is not working.
Follow the ➡️ step-by-step ➡️ instructions in this guide to turn off the headphone mode on your phone, which is more likely to solve the problem. If you are still having trouble, leave a comment, and we will try to figure it out together 🙂.
🔌 1. Disconnect headphones and then reconnect them to remove the headphone mode
Option 1. To get rid of the headphone icon on your phone, insert the headphone plug into the phone jack and then pull it out. If that doesn’t work, try using different headphones.
Option 2. Plug in your headphones, start playback of any sound on YouTube or turn on your music player. After starting a video, song, or podcast, remove the headphones.
Option 3. is to connect the headphones to the earphone jack, restart the phone, wait for it to boot up, and then unplug the headphones. Alternatively, to remove the headphone icon on an Android device, you can try plugging in wireless headphones if they are available. This may shift the system’s hung “focus.”
✈️ 2. Turn on Airplane Mode when the airplane icon appears.
Turning on headphones might happen because one of the communication modules has stopped working. To shut them all down, switch to Airplane Mode.
- Activate Airplane Mode.
- Wait a minute.
- Turn off Airplane Mode.
- Check that the headphone icon on the phone is lit.
🔁 3. Restart your phone – this often disables the headphone icon
Restart your phone. If that doesn’t work, try a more drastic solution: power off the phone, remove the battery (if possible), wait a minute, reinsert the battery, and power on the phone.
This method can fix many software problems, including those caused by turning on headphone mode.
🛠️ 4. Install the Switcher app to disable headphone mode easily
On Android, you can find apps that switch between speakers and headphones for audio playback. These apps often have toggle widgets and can be installed through the app settings. Here are some of the top apps for turning off headphone mode:
📻 5. Additional options to disable the headphone icon
These are the latest software tricks that allow you to remove the connected headphones icon on your phone:
- Clear the cache of the Radio app. If you use it. Wired headphones are usually also a radio antenna, so there are freezes. (The screenshots show a third-party application, not a radio:)
- Remove the Radio app and other player apps. Everything you were listening to with headphones. Maybe one of the players is not working properly and causing errors.
- Set the alarm to 1 minute earlier. The alarm will override the headphones, all system sounds, and more.
- Plug in the headphones and call someone. After the connection is established (“on the other end”), unplug the headphones.
🔨 6. Factory resetting is a drastic measure to turn off the wired headphone mode
If you’re uncertain, don’t reset your phone to its factory settings. Instead, bring it to a service center right away. Repairs of this sort are costly, and you run the risk of worsening the situation without realizing it.
❗ If the headphone icon is still on the phone but no sound is coming from the speaker, then the hard reset or factory reset has become stuck. Get the data/settings backed up and perform a factory reset in the phone’s settings. If you’re unable to find out how to do it, simply Google the reset instructions for your phone model.
Let’s take a look at the physical problems.
If all else fails, it’s probably a physical problem.
🧹 7. We clean the connector of dirt or moisture
Dust may have entered the connection, or the headphones may have been exposed to rain, snow, or high humidity. These occurrences usually cause the headphone icon to become stuck on.
To check if there is dirt in the connection, use a narrow beam flashlight. To check if there is dirt in the connection, use a narrow beam flashlight. Dry it properly. If you find dirt, clean the affected area in a cautious manner with a broken toothpick wrapped in a damp cloth. Be careful not to break the connection❗.
💧 8. Dry the connector – if water gets in
If water activates the headphone mode, dry your phone immediately. Water can cause severe damage. If you can, take out the battery and store it in a dry area. Choose a warm place, but avoid direct sunlight and placing it on top of the battery. The traditional method is to immerse it in rice because it absorbs moisture effectively.
Be careful when cleaning the connector with a broken toothpick wrapped in a damp cloth and dried. This idea comes from Uncle Sasha’s suggestion in the comments.Breaking the connector can happen if you’re not careful.
🛠️ 9. We go to the repair shop when nothing works.
Sometimes the plug contacts get stuck, which makes the plug faulty and tricks the phone into thinking that headphones are connected. It’s best not to try taking your phone apart unless you have experience with this and soldering.
Instead, take it to a service center for repair, as this kind of work can be expensive. If you try to repair it yourself, you could unintentionally make the issue worse.
