HUAWEI has released new true wireless earbuds FreeBuds 7, which are open-fit earbuds . The wireless earbuds feature a completely updated design, sound system, and controls; improved noise cancellation and call recording have been added. Since the previous generation was released 1.5 years ago, the list of changes is about twice as long compared to new Bluetooth earbuds from Sony, Bose, Sennheiser, and Apple.

Sound
The earbuds feature a new acoustic chamber and driver. Instead of a dual driver, there’s now a single dynamic driver, similar to the FreeBuds 5. While the company doesn’t disclose the exact driver size, they do list the frequency range as 14 Hz to 48 kHz. Based on promotional materials, the driver size is approximately 11 mm. The new model also received the third-generation proprietary audio chip. Compared to the previous generation, we’re promised a 14% improvement in frequency balance and a 20% reduction in noise level.
For Huawei’s flagship earbuds, the proprietary L2HC 5.0 audio codec is available with a bitrate of 4.6 Mbps. For other sources, the universally supported LDAC codec is available. For PCs or sources without LDAC, you can use an adapter with a codec, for example, FiiO Air Link.
You can adjust the sound or enable spatial audio in the proprietary HUAWEI AI Life app for iOS and for Android – download is available only from the official website.
Noise Cancellation
With the new audio processor and redesigned acoustic chamber, improved noise cancellation performance is promised. The average noise cancellation depth is 2.3 times greater compared to the previous generation. The new model better suppresses voices in the mid-range, traffic noise, and snoring. Transparency mode isn’t mentioned, so its inclusion in the 7th generation is unlikely.
In the two previous generations, noise cancellation was on par with some in-ear models up to $60. This is a top-tier level for open-fit earbuds, although far from the leader in noise cancellation among open-fit earbuds, Apple Airpods 4 ANC.
Microphone
As with the previous generation, the earbuds have 3 microphones plus a bone conduction sensor. We’re promised detailed voice transmission in noisy environments up to 100 dB, which is roughly equivalent to a vacuum cleaner running at full power nearby. There’s also wind resistance up to 8 m/s.
Features
The new model includes call recording with transcription to text. However, this feature, along with the previously available translator and voice assistant functions, is only available to Huawei device owners.
Controls
Touch controls are used, and the sensor is now located on the inner edge, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Buds 4 Pro or Galaxy Buds 4 open-fit earbuds. Swipe actions are also available.
Battery Life
Playback time has increased to 8.5 hours for the earbuds alone and up to 42 hours with the charging case using basic codecs. The previous generation lasted 6.5 and 36 hours respectively in our tests with the AAC codec. Wireless charging support has been retained.
Design
The HUAWEI FreeBuds 7 features a completely redesigned look for both the earbuds and the charging case. The new model visually resembles the Huawei FreeBuds 5 Pro more closely. The weight of each earbud has decreased from 4.9g to 4.3g, and the charging case is 25% smaller. Comfort has also been improved, with an average reduction in ear pressure of about 19% promised. It’s worth noting that the previous two generations of earbuds are comfortable and do not cause discomfort during prolonged wear. Huawei knows how to make comfortable earbuds, like the Huawei FreeClip 2.
Other
Among other changes:
- Bluetooth 6.0 instead of 5.2.
- Earbud dust and water resistance is IP55 instead of IP54. The charging case has no protection rating.
- Proprietary NearLink E2.0 connection has been added.
- Customization for the connection pop-up window has been added.
- Online search has been added for iOS and Android systems.
Price and Availability
The earbuds go on sale September 7th at the Huawei store. The price in China is $149. They’re available in four colors: orange, purple, black, and white. Expect the earbuds to appear on other marketplaces by the end of the month.
