JBL just refreshed their smallest speaker in the lineup — JBL Go 5 is out at $58. The portable speaker JBL Go 4 was priced at $49.95 and was one of the best-selling compact speakers in the world. I’m breaking down what justifies the extra $8.
- Bluetooth: 5.3 → 6.0 (LC3 and LE Audio retained)
- Power: 4.2W → 4.8W RMS average (nominal) output (+14%)
- Battery: 7h → 8h (+ Playtime Boost up to 10h)
- Protection: IP67 → IP68, full waterproofing leveled up
- USB-C audio with built-in DAC — lossless over the wire
- WINK lighting
- Auracast now via BT 6.0 (was present in Go 4 via 5.3)

Sound. The JBL Go 5 output climbed 14% — from 4.2 to 4.8W RMS. The 45mm driver is the same size as the Go 4, but pushes more power. Codecs on board: SBC, AAC, and LC3 via LE Audio.
USB-C Audio. The headline spec of the JBL Go 5. On the Go 4, USB-C was charge-only. On the Go 5, there’s a built-in DAC. Plug it into a laptop or phone via cable and you get lossless audio without any wireless compression. For a $58 speaker — unexpected. Though what exactly “lossless” means through a single mono driver is an open question =)

Protection. IP67 → IP68. The Go 4 handled one meter of water for 30 minutes. The Go 5 promises more — JBL hasn’t specified the exact parameters yet.
Battery. 8 hours baseline, up to 10 with Playtime Boost — an economy mode that dials back the bass. The 1000 mAh battery is the same capacity as Go 4 — they optimized power consumption instead of adding cells. Charging takes about 3 hours via USB-C (5V/1A). The Go 4 had 7 + 2. One extra hour isn’t a revolution, but it’s a welcome addition.

WINK. Built-in lighting, customizable through the JBL Portable app. It adds visual flair, but also 40 grams of weight — the speaker went from 190g to 230g. Available in 6 colors: black, red, sky blue, pink, orange, and dark blue (cloisonné). Available in 6 colors: black, red, sky blue, pink, orange, and dark blue (cloisonné).
Auracast. Broadcast audio to multiple wireless speakers simultaneously. The Go 4 had it via Bluetooth 5.3; the Go 5 runs it over BT 6.0 with improved synchronization.
Stereo Pair. AirTouch feature — turn on two Go 5s next to each other and they automatically link into a stereo pair. No app, no setup.

Release Date. The JBL Go 5 is available for pre-order in China. Open sales begin March 19, 2026. A global release date hasn’t been announced yet — expected in the coming weeks.
The Go 5 isn’t just a color refresh and a battery bump. The USB-C DAC turns this pocket speaker into a miniature sound card. At $58 — it’s an interesting proposition, assuming the global price doesn’t creep up. Our test will show.
What do you think — does a built-in DAC make sense in a $58 speaker, or is it just a marketing bullet point? Drop your thoughts in the comments — I’d love to hear what you think.
