OnePlus Buds 4 long-awaited review. My expectations were through the roof. The review turned out interesting so read it through to the end. We will of course compare the new Buds 4 with Realme Buds Air 7 Pro ($66), the previous version OnePlus Buds 3 ($57), OnePlus Buds Pro 3 ($120), and HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro 4 ($170). And of course I will compare them with their twin brother OPPO Enco Free 4 ($68). I will briefly compare them with Technics EAH-AZ100 ($403). And we will find out whether OnePlus Buds 4 is the new wireless earbuds king or Realme held their ground.
OnePlus Buds 4 are wireless in-ear wireless earbuds from 2025 for $73. The company focused on improved sound quality, active noise cancellation (ANC), a translator, and low audio latency in games. So let us test all of this.

Out of the box, OnePlus Buds 4 have a heavy low-end sound.
If you switch to AAC, performance drops by about 15%, making the sound slightly worse than on the regular OnePlus Buds 3. That makes LHDC 5.0 support essential. Below is my evaluation and description of the sound using LHDC 5.0. On an iPhone or Android device without LHDC, you can safely subtract 1.5 points out of 10 for sound quality.
Important! OnePlus Buds 4 do not support older versions of the LHDC codec, working only with LHDC 5. Furthermore, the codec operates stably on OnePlus phones, which I tested on the 9R and 11. On devices from other brands, support is hit-or-miss. This became clear after testing on other phones and reviewing feedback from owners in our Telegram group.
You can enable the LHDC codec inside the HeyMelody companion app for Android. Look for the setting called “High-Resolution Mode”. This option might not show up until you enable the codec in your Bluetooth settings first.
On certain models, you will find this toggle inside the Android developer options.
I suggest turning on high-resolution audio in the app settings. The “serenade” EQ preset degrades the sound if you attempt to boost the vocals, so you are better off sticking with the default preset. I do recommend setting up the Golden Sound profile, as testing shows it genuinely improves the audio here, adding a positive bump of 0.2-0.3 points out of 10. However, this varies depending on your personal hearing.



The sound nozzle on the Buds 4 matches the size of the Buds 3, as several people asked in the comments. Your old ear tips will fit just fine.

Too many mids, especially in the upper range, make sound harsh, intrusive, and fatiguing fast. The mix can sound shouty or “boxy.” Conversely, a shortage of mids results in a hollow, recessed sound where vocals and main instruments lose their presence and seem distant, draining the music of energy and overall clarity.

Highs, or treble (4 kHz – 20 kHz) – these frequencies are responsible for brightness, sparkle, detail, and that sense of ‘air’ in a music mix. This range helps you pick out the finest details, like string overtones, cymbal shimmer, and sibilant sounds in vocals.
An optimal balance makes music sound lively, clean, and open. Too much, however, leads to unnecessary harshness, causes sibilance (overly loud ‘s’ sounds), and makes cymbals sound unpleasantly ‘grainy’ or metallic, quickly fatiguing your ears. Too little, and the entire mix sounds dull, muffled, and ‘closed-in’ (veiled). The sound loses its detail and openness, feeling like you’re listening through a thick filter that robs the music of clarity.

The best soundstage makes music feel immersive and realistic, letting you pinpoint each element in space—whether it’s to your left or right, closer or further away, or above or below your head. A lack of it results in a monolithic sound, as if everything is coming from a single point, making it difficult to discern the position of each instrument. That kind of powerful bass works really well here, and Realme simply cannot match it. Musical engagement sits at a 10/10. With the OnePlus Buds 4, you just want to dance and vibe to the music without overanalyzing it, enjoying yourself while walking down the street.
Realme Buds Air 7 Pro are geared toward anyone who values timbre accuracy, intimate vocals, and emotional delivery. They lean less on the low end while offering greater detail and a more analytical presentation. There is enough resolution here to pick apart individual instrument tracks. You will want to dance with the Realme pair as well, but to calmer genres; they push you to lean back and immerse yourself in the music, savoring every detail, instrument track, and nuance.

In practice:
- Inside the HeyMelody app settings, Oppo includes an extra Dynaudio EQ option that simply dumps in more bass. It is pretty useless, as it does not improve sound quality at all.
- Switching between noise cancellation and transparency modes on the OnePlus triggers a simple chime. On the Oppo, because I am using the Chinese version, it speaks out loud in Chinese.
- The translator feature inside the app operates identically.
- Design differences: the Oppo charging case is glossy, whereas the OnePlus case uses a matte finish.
- Oppo features a Dynaudio badge on the back of the charging case, while OnePlus leaves it off.
Otherwise there is practically no difference.

Verdict:
I recommend the OnePlus Buds 4 because they lack Chinese voice prompts, and the matte case looks nicer while feeling more durable. Oppo offers black and white finishes, while OnePlus comes in gray and green.

The sound on version 4 outperforms the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 slightly. There is a bit less bass, but it sounds more natural. The mids are definitively superior—that is the standout improvement, bringing closer, higher-quality, and more emotional vocals. Highs remain roughly the same, while detail retrieval, natural timbre, and soundstage have all improved. My personal choice is definitely the OnePlus Buds 4 ($73).

Sound on version 4 is slightly better than on the HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro 4. This shows up most clearly in high-frequency quality, with slightly more intimate mids and heavier bass on the OnePlus Buds 4, though they trade blows.

I have not reached a final verdict on the Technics EAH-AZ100 yet. I will only say that the model impressed me, easily beating the 80s. There are specific aspects I will cover in the full review; I do not want to rush into an unformed opinion. Out of the box, the sound did not blow me away, but once I started tweaking the EQ, I realized there is much more to them and immense tuning potential here. The model deserves attention, and I expect it will comfortably land in the Top 5. The sound is great. I will keep testing since they are next in line for review, so do not miss it.

The translator functions well and offers 2 separate modes:

The translator feels quite primitive right now, but it functions. Unlike the Realme, which only translated to or from Chinese on my OnePlus 11—though it worked fine on Sasha’s Motorola G72. All in all, for a casual chat with a stranger abroad, I wouldn’t call it convenient, but given the circumstances, it beats having nothing. It also outperforms the $350 iKKO Active Buds I tested that featured a built-in screen and translation. Let us see how this evolves; the technology clearly has a future.



Difference between the global and Chinese versions:
Everything is identical, except you should double-check that Google Fast Pair quick pairing is present on the global model, as the Chinese version omits it in favor of OnePlus’s proprietary standard.
Design



Comfort is how the earbuds feel during extended wear: ear pressure, fit, weight, and ventilation. A comfortable model doesn’t chafe, squeeze the ear canal or head, and doesn’t cause fatigue even after a couple of hours; an uncomfortable one quickly reminds you of itself through pain, heat, or a “plugged” feeling in the ears.

The charging case is about the same size as the last generation’s, just with an oval shape instead of a rectangle.Durability — how well the earbuds and charging case hold up to daily use: This includes the quality of the plastic and hinge, water resistance, wear on the ear tips, and the reliability of connectors and buttons. High durability means nothing is loose, peeling, or cracking after a year or two. Conversely, low durability means you’ll see cracks, looseness, hinge noise, or connection issues after just a couple of months.

The OnePlus Buds 4 earned a final score of 8.6 out of 10, making it a gorgeous product. Compared to Realme, the sound leans heavier on the low end with minor sacrifices in detail retrieval, natural timbre, and soundstage during head-to-head listening. However, OnePlus wins on features, offering a slightly better microphone alongside superior noise cancellation and transparency modes. I also preferred the build of the OnePlus a bit more since it skips gloss and generally makes for a more convenient device.
So in the end, what should you buy: OnePlus Buds 4, 3, 3 Pro, Realme Buds Air 7 Pro, or HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro 4?
If you want heavy bass, go with the OnePlus Buds 4. If you want maximum sound quality driven by detail, an analytical presentation, and natural timbres, choose Realme. What would I pick? I would choose both the Realme Buds Air 7 Pro and the OnePlus Buds 4. I know that sounds like a cop-out, but both models deserve a spot in your collection, especially since neither costs a fortune. Use the OnePlus outdoors for walks, phone calls, ANC, and transparency mode, paired with bass-heavy music. Use the Realme at home under calmer conditions to sit back and savor the musical details, though they hold up outdoors too. Grab the HUAWEI if you need the absolute best microphone, top-tier ANC, convenient controls, and styling.
Bluetooth codec. The Realme Buds Air 7 Pro support older iterations of LHDC, allowing you to stream via LHDC 3, which enjoys broad support across most phones. On the OnePlus Buds 4, the LHDC 5 codec runs stably only on OnePlus handsets and behaves selectively with other brands.

Is it worth waiting for OnePlus Buds 4 Pro?
Yes, absolutely. Given what they achieved with the 3 and 3 Pro, I expect their sound to be even cooler. Honestly, I do not expect anyone else to drop anything groundbreaking regarding sound quality for the rest of the year. As for features, I am genuinely looking forward to the Apple AirPods Pro 3. We will see how that turns out.
