realme buds air 7 pro

Realme Buds Air 7 Pro – the best budget wireless earbuds for sound under $150. Key selling point: THE BEST sound among TWS in this price range, with live and synchronized translation that isn’t tied to the phone manufacturer. Downsides: the earbuds have a large design that might not fit everyone, and we’ve seen many complaints about their reliability on our social media. Despite this, the model is №1 in popularity among our social media users.

Reasons to buy:
  • Best sound in wireless earbuds under $300
  • Live and simultaneous translation
  • Reference-level battery life
Reasons not to buy:
  • User complaints regarding reliability

9.00 Using the LHDC 5.0 codec, performance sits right alongside some models priced up to $300. The wireless earbuds offer an optimal frequency balance. You get a spacious soundstage with clear width and depth rendering. The sound is moderately detailed and natural. First batches of the Chinese version suffered from an excess of highs, but the global version doesn’t have this issue.

OnePlus Buds 4

OnePlus Buds 4 – the best wireless earbuds with a bass-heavy sound in 2026. Key selling point: excellent out-of-the-box bass that doesn’t need EQ tuning. They’re slightly behind the Realme Buds Air 7 Pro in sound quality but make up for it with features and build quality. This model has no critical flaws. LHDC 5.0 codec support and a mobile Snapdragon platform source are recommended, as the sound is noticeably worse on MediaTek.

Reasons to buy:
  • Top-tier bass sound without needing EQ tweaks
  • Comfortable fit
  • Sound improves with the golden hearing profile
Reasons not to buy:
  • Minor downsides: translator only works on OnePlus phones
  • LHDC 5.0 codec support is recommended
  • Sound quality is worse on MediaTek devices compared to Snapdragon
Sound

The final sound score is calculated using this formula:

Frequency balance + Detail retrieval + Soundstage + Natural timbre / 4 = Final Sound Score.

.
8.58 The emphasis is on pleasant bass and the highs. Top-tier sound, reasonably natural without noticeable artificiality or grain. There is enough detail retrieval to pick apart instrument textures, even in busy tracks with complex arrangements. The soundstage is spacious with clean separation between vocals and instruments. Downsides include an abundance of bass that overly crowds the stage and reduces transparency in the mids. There is also a slight lack of detail and texture in the sound.

6.1
Realme Buds Air 8 Pro

Key selling point: excellent sound with the AAC codec, triple multipoint, a top-tier microphone, translator, and built-in voice assistant. Key reason not to buy: the LHDC codec might not work before the earbuds’ official release, the glossy accents attract fingerprints, and the sound is worse than the previous generation.

Reasons to buy:
  • Top-tier and engaging sound
  • Live simultaneous translation, voice assistant
  • Simultaneous connection to three devices
Reasons not to buy:
  • LHDC codec does not work
  • Glossy finish gets dirty quickly
Sound

The final sound score is calculated using this formula:

Frequency balance + Detail retrieval + Soundstage + Natural timbre / 4 = Final Sound Score.

.
8.25 Realme Buds Air 8 Pro are good earbuds if considered completely apart from the Realme Buds Air lineup. I liked the sound. If you view this model as a continuation of the 7 Pro series, the 8 Pro sounds worse by 0.67 out of 10. On the latest firmware 1.1.0.85 using the LHDC 5.0 codec, the 8 Pro falls short in 4 out of 6 criteria, while tying in 2. The main drops are in the mids, detail retrieval, and soundstage (-1 each). Highs lose 0.5 due to a lack of quantity, while bass and timbre remain on par with the 7 Pro.

The difference in sound is significant when compared head-to-head. If you listen to the 8 Pro in solo mode, it produces great sound that you enjoy and no flaws particularly stand out. But when you start comparing, it becomes clear within the first 10 seconds that the 7 Pro is better. In the end, if you place both models on a table, I would choose the 7 Pro without hesitation. A wider soundstage, closer and more transparent vocals, more detail retrieval, and overall the 7 Pro feels like the fresher model while the 8 Pro feels like last year’s.

8.00 Comfortable, the default bundled ear tips fit well. No discomfort after a couple of hours of use. Build is free of defects, with visually and tactically high-quality materials. The experience is only spoiled by the fingerprint-prone gloss. Effectively, they made a mirror finish that gets covered in smudges at the mere thought of it, requiring you to wipe it down every time. I liked the look of the earbuds and case. Available in white and black.

OnePlus Buds Pro 3

OnePlus Buds Pro 3 are the best wireless TWS earbuds of 2024. After the release of the OnePlus Buds 4, buying the Pro 3 seems pointless because the 4th version offers better sound. The Pro 3 still scores a very good 8.5/10 for sound, especially considering its $120 price. I’ve included this model to clarify the position of one of my favorite recommendations that many of you have asked about. The OnePlus Buds Pro 4, which we eagerly anticipated this year, didn’t materialize; we’ll see what they bring in 2026.

Reasons to buy:
  • Top-tier sound among TWS
  • Not demanding on the mobile platform—Snapdragon or MTK
  • Full support for the LHDC 3.0 audio codec
Reasons not to buy:
  • Poor transparency mode
  • OnePlus Buds 4 exist—better and cheaper
Sound

The final sound score is calculated using this formula:

Frequency balance + Detail retrieval + Soundstage + Natural timbre / 4 = Final Sound Score.

.
8.43 Moderately low-frequency sound. At the same time bright, with slightly recessed mids, and most importantly with the correct frequency balance. The kind of setup where you pick the right size ear tips, put them in your ears, and enjoy your favorite music. The EQ has decent presets; I recommend trying the Clarity preset. The sound is detailed, natural in timbre, and features a wide soundstage.

Realme Buds Air8

Key selling point: pleasant bass-heavy sound that rivals top-tier and silver league models. It also features triple multipoint, a translator, and a built-in voice assistant. The fit is comfortable, and the appearance is appealing. They also set a benchmark for battery life. Downsides: the transparency mode and controls are just average.

Reasons to buy:
  • Pleasant bass-heavy sound
  • Triple multipoint, translator, and voice assistant.
  • Comfortable fit and appealing look.
Reasons not to buy:
  • Mediocre transparency mode and average noise cancellation
  • Noticeable synthetic timbre in the sound

8.19 The overall sound presentation strongly reminds me of the Realme Buds 7 Pro. I thought the Realme Buds Air 8 would be stripped-down 7 Pros, but this is clearly high settings compared to the 7 Pro’s ultra graphics settings, to use a video game analogy. The overall difference in quality is roughly 0.5 points out of 10. The model has no weaknesses, and its main strength is the sound itself. At $43, it is an absolute steal and buy 3 pairs. The model confidently flies into the silver league with 8-9 points, which is nonsense for a $40 model.

Battery life ?

Headphone battery life is the playback time without recharging, measured in hours. Manufacturers measure without active noise cancellation (ANC), at medium volume (50-70%) and usually with the AAC codec, as these parameters affect battery consumption. Actual time may vary from 1% to 50%, depending on volume, active noise cancellation features enabled, codec (LDAC or other) and environmental conditions (cold, hot). It is important to consider not only the claimed playback time, but also the charging time and fast charging support.

EarFun Air Pro 4 Plus

Key selling point: detailed sound with superb vocal reproduction and excellent naturalness. The app offers sound settings, and it includes LDAC and 3 aptX codecs. It also features a translator for 146 languages and dialects. The earbuds are sensitive to EQ adjustments, so tuning is recommended. These earbuds outperform the Realme Buds Air 7 Pro in many aspects, which is significant. Downsides: average noise cancellation and transparency, and the controls might not suit your preference.

Reasons to buy:
  • Detailed sound
  • Sound settings: 10-band EQ, preset modes, custom tuning
  • Translator for 165 languages and dialects
  • LDAC and 3 aptX Bluetooth codecs
Reasons not to buy:
  • Treble is a bit harsh
  • The balanced armature driver occasionally resonates
  • Battery life is shorter than claimed
Sound

The final sound score is calculated using this formula:

Frequency balance + Detail retrieval + Soundstage + Natural timbre / 4 = Final Sound Score.

.
8.33 The strong suit of the EarFun Air Pro 4 Plus is its stunning vocal delivery across almost any track. If you want an emotional, lively, and soul-stirring performance, the Air Pro 4 Plus delivers. Natural timbre is also top-notch despite a slightly cool tint from the balanced armature driver. Among the weaknesses, I would point out the narrow soundstage, which leads to minor yet noticeable issues with detail retrieval and proper instrument separation across the soundstage. The headphones also lack a bit of bass, which is easily fixed via the EQ, with rock being the best preset for it.

SoundCore Liberty 4 Pro

SoundCore Liberty 4 Pro – best wireless earbuds for Android phones, offering strong low-frequency sound. Key selling point: pleasant low-frequency sound, good noise cancellation and microphone performance in quiet environments, and a convenient charging case with a screen. Downsides: lack of detail and naturalness in the mids, the case screen offers minimal information, and in my unit, the earbuds lost 30% battery capacity over a year.

Reasons to buy:
  • Pleasant low-frequency sound
  • Top-tier microphone in quiet environments
  • Convenient screen on the case
Reasons not to buy:
  • Over a year, battery capacity dropped to 30%
  • Lacks detail and naturalness in the mids and highs
  • The screen on the case is uninformative

7.88 With an emphasis on low frequencies and excessive fill. Bass slightly overpowers the mids, and the sound lacks transparency. Highs are bright with a lack of expressiveness. Detail retrieval is enough to make out the primary and secondary parts. The sound is moderately natural, with a bit of grain in the highs and boomy lows. The soundstage is slightly wider than the head with false width.

Key selling point: top-tier sound with an equalizer suitable for analytical listeners and various music genres. It includes the aptX Lossless codec, has a pleasant appearance, and offers good noise cancellation with the right ear tips. Significant downsides include limited functionality: an average transparency mode, inconvenient controls, restricted app features, no auto-pause, and no dual connection.

Reasons to buy:
  • Top-tier sound with EQ
  • Good active noise cancellation if you pick the right ear tips
Reasons not to buy:

8.01 With the LDAC codec, sound improves by up to 30%. The earbuds feature a bass-heavy sound profile, slightly recessed mids, and subdued highs. I did not notice any blatant artificial timbre, and grain is kept to a minimum. The sound is spacious and full-bodied, with good instrument separation across the soundstage. Detail retrieval is good, though parsing instrument textures is harder compared to top models. It lacks sonic expressiveness, a bit of brightness, and airiness, without which this kind of sound gets old fast. EQ tuning compensates for some of these shortcomings.

Actual time may vary from 1% to 50%, depending on volume, active noise cancellation features enabled, codec (LDAC or other) and environmental conditions (cold, hot). It is important to consider not only the claimed playback time, but also the charging time and fast charging support.

VIVO TWS 5 Hi-Fi

These earbuds stand out for their active noise cancellation and battery life, rivaling top manufacturers. The microphone performance in noisy conditions is also on par with reference standards. They feature triple multipoint, LHDC, and LDAC codecs. While the sound is present, it benefits from a burn-in period and EQ fine-tuning. However, the earbuds have average detail retrieval and a narrow soundstage that can’t be fixed with sound settings.

Reasons to buy:
  • Low-frequency sound.
  • Top-tier active noise cancellation and battery life
  • Triple multipoint
  • Microphone in noisy conditions on par with reference models
Reasons not to buy:
  • Low detail retrieval and narrow soundstage
  • Poor transparency mode
  • Fingerprint-prone glossy plastic
Sound

The final sound score is calculated using this formula:

Frequency balance + Detail retrieval + Soundstage + Natural timbre / 4 = Final Sound Score.

.
7.56 With an emphasis on low and high frequencies. Its strength lies in accented highs without noticeable artificiality or grain, along with intimate and clear vocals and good naturalness. Weaknesses include average detail retrieval, lacking clarity and texture. The soundstage is narrow, with sound seemingly contained within your head. Some of these drawbacks can be mitigated with an equalizer, potentially achieving a pleasant, engaging sound. VIVO TWS 5 Hi-Fi fall into the bronze league, but with sound improvements, they approach the silver league.

Microphone – We assess speech transmission quality by testing the microphone in two main scenarios: quiet and noisy environments.

Quiet environment – This involves recording indoors with minimal background noise. Noisy environment – This means recording outdoors near a six-lane road with maximum traffic noise.

.
9.40 In quiet conditions: 8.8 In noisy conditions: 10 Vocals are clear in quiet environments, with faint clicking sounds audible in some spots. In noisy environments with a handheld vacuum cleaner, the microphone isolates the voice without degrading vocal quality. There is a significant quality upgrade compared to the previous generation.

8.34 An optimal and modern feature set that includes everything necessary, such as 3-device multipoint. The standout feature is active noise cancellation (ANC), which outperforms the Sony WF-1000XM5 and Soundcore Liberty 5. The microphone noise cancellation suppresses loud noises without distorting speech, performing at the level of reference models. Battery life matches the top tier. The weak points are transparency mode and controls, which perform at the level of $50-60 models.

EarFun Air Pro 4

EarFun Air Pro 4 – best TWS earbuds supporting two popular audio codec families: LDAC and aptX Lossless. Key selling point: a well-balanced model without critical flaws. It offers bronze-league sound quality with tuning potential, reference battery life, a convenient app, and includes LDAC and aptX codecs. Downsides: a bright out-of-the-box sound, the proprietary app uses up to 1GB of RAM, and poor microphone noise cancellation.

Reasons to buy:
  • Good sound with tuning potential
  • LDAC and aptX codecs
  • Reference-quality battery life
  • Spacious case
Reasons not to buy:
  • Out of the box, the high-frequency tuning is bright.
  • The EarFun Audio app uses 1 GB of RAM on Android.

SOUNDPEATS H3

The Soundpeats H3 offer a pleasant and detailed sound, but only after EQ adjustment. Out of the box, the sound is excessively bass-heavy and quickly becomes fatiguing. I’m not sure who would enjoy this tuning; it feels like the company just cranked up the bass instead of tuning it. The earbuds’ features are a weak point – they’re basic. They even pale in comparison to some budget models offering triple multipoint, a translator, or 10+ hours of battery life. Build quality is solid, though unremarkable. The stemless design is an acquired taste. Overall, these earbuds are best for music, and only if you adjust the equalizer.

Reasons to buy:
  • Detailed sound with deep bass after tuning the EQ.
  • Microphone noise cancellation close to flagship tier.
Reasons not to buy:
  • Boomey sound out of the box.
  • Awkward controls and useless transparency mode.
  • Bulky earbud and charging case design.
Sound

The final sound score is calculated using this formula:

Frequency balance + Detail retrieval + Soundstage + Natural timbre / 4 = Final Sound Score.

.
8.18 On par with top models, but you need to unlock their potential yourself with an equalizer. The out-of-the-box tuning is excessively bass-heavy and quickly becomes fatiguing. In bass-heavy tracks, there’s a continuous hum with a lack of transparency and airiness. However, the sound is accurate and clear. These earbuds confidently enter the MyChooz silver league. With a slight bass reduction via the equalizer or by trying a couple of presets, the sound moves closer to the gold league. Higher up the ranking, competition comes from models with planar drivers and xMEMS, which have advantages over armature drivers. Even so, the SoundPEATS H3 pleasantly surprise with sound quality and hold attention after EQ adjustment.

HiFiMan Svanar Wireless JR

HiFiMan Svanar Wireless JR ($71) – best TWS earbuds 2026, audiophile model. These are audiophile wireless earbuds because you get maximum sound quality with minimal features. The main drawback is the microphone, which is useless in noisy conditions, and the de facto absence of an app.

There are 3 versions of Hifiman Svanar:

The HiFiMan Svanar Wireless JR offers better sound than the Nothing Ear (a) by 0.5 points out of 10. BUT. The app is awful and simply fails to find the earbuds. Noise cancellation and transparency are average at 6 out of 10. The microphone scores 4 out of 10 in noisy conditions, one of the lowest scores, though it’s fine in quiet environments.

  • Hifiman Svanar Wireless JR: Class AB balanced amplifier + DSP processing, no R2R DAC. Two JR versions exist: one with the LDAC codec, and one without.
  • Hifiman Svanar Wireless LE: R2R DAC, amplifier, no LDAC codec. (Costs more, sounds worse.)
  • Hifiman Svanar Wireless (“senior”): R2R DAC, amplifier, LDAC codec. This model costs $222.

Sound rating — 7.5/10. Pleasant and moderate low-frequency sound, with a slight dip in the mids and excellent engagement. The mids are the weak spot of this model. The sound is easily fixed with the EQ, which makes the earbuds engaging and keeps your attention, not least thanks to the punchy and rich bass. Another strong point of the earbuds is naturalness. Instruments sound natural and without grain. The soundstage is wider than your head, with a sense of spaciousness. Excellent detail retrieval, and instruments and vocals do not get muddy even in busy tracks. This model ranks 3rd in sound. But the features ruined everything, and for me, that’s equally important. Plus, the design of the case and the earbuds themselves is simply bulky. Overall, they cost $71 solely for the sound, but if you’ll be listening exclusively at home and you love a moderate sound profile—something between the bass-heavy OnePlus and detailed SoundPeats—they are worth getting.

Frequency balance – 7.5/10. Well-developed lows, recessed mids, and a lack of highs.
Low frequencies — 7.5/10. Basses are pleasant, punchy, and natural, but there isn’t enough of them.
Mid frequencies — 7/10. Vocals are recessed behind the mix and lack distinctness. The vocalist isn’t singing right to you.
High frequencies — 6.5/10. Highs are lacking. They are rather grainy and scarce.
Detail retrieval – 7/10, average. Secondary parts require a bit of listening. The mids are the weakest part of this model, vocals and backing tracks are muddy, and some information is lost, not to mention tertiary sounds.
Soundstage — 8/10. Wider than your head, with a sense of spaciousness, but the model is far from ideal.
Naturalness — 7.5/10. The main minus is grain on drum cymbals. Drums play +- decently, and vocals are conveyed well.
Musical engagement 7/10. Punchy sound due to the low frequencies, though the impression is spoiled by the muffled sound profile. With the EQ, the earbuds sound different and hold your attention much stronger.

Microphone — 6.5/10. In noisy environments — 4/10. In quiet environments — 9/10:

Xiaomi Buds 5

Xiaomi Buds 5 – best in-ear TWS earbuds under $100, offering a balance of price, sound, and features. Excellent out-of-the-box sound requires minimal tuning. The microphone is reference-quality, and it includes a built-in voice recorder for 3 hours of continuous recording. Battery life, fit, and build quality are excellent. The only downside is the inconvenient squeeze control.

Xiaomi Buds 5 microphone

Microphone – We assess speech transmission quality by testing the microphone in two main scenarios: quiet and noisy environments.

Quiet environment – This involves recording indoors with minimal background noise. Noisy environment – This means recording outdoors near a six-lane road with maximum traffic noise.

.
8.75 In quiet conditions: 9.5 In noisy conditions: 8 In quiet conditions, the microphone performs very well, making your voice sound detailed and clear. The recording quality even beats our reference Huawei FreeBuds Pro 4. But in noisy environments, like next to a 6-lane road, quality drops noticeably and it gets harder to make out your voice. You get this exact same recording quality when using the voice recorder mode.

The Xiaomi Buds 5 feature a built-in voice recorder that captures ambient sound, app audio, and phone calls. You turn it on through the companion app. Each earbud has enough memory for 90 minutes of recording—giving you 180 minutes, or 3 hours, in total. Recordings are saved directly on the earbuds, and you need to manually save them to your phone through the app. From there, you can listen to them or transfer them to network storage, like a cloud drive. You can record audio without even taking the earbuds out of the charging case—you just need to open the lid.

The downsides include the transfer time for a 3-hour recording, which can take up to 20-25 minutes. The share menu might not pop up for a 90-minute recording. And if it does, it takes 15-20 minutes, during which you should avoid touching your phone and keep the screen unlocked.

Xiaomi Buds 5 Sound Score among all in-ear earbuds – 8.2/10. The main sound drawbacks are excessively bright highs out of the box and slightly colored sound. In complex arrangements, detail retrieval decreases, making it harder to isolate musical instruments. The main advantage is the mids: vocals and instruments sound clean, pleasant, and natural. The Xiaomi Buds 5 are the best option for those seeking versatile in-ear earbuds for various music genres.

Musical engagement 7/10. Good sound for everyday music listening, videos, and gaming.

Frequency balance — 8/10. V-shaped sound profile with the “Adaptive Sound” feature. Flat by default with bright highs.
Lows – 8/10. Moderate, just as much as needed. Bass is pleasant, full-bodied. In bass-heavy tracks, it’s well-defined and not boomy — (The Weeknd – Blinding Lights). (Michael Jackson – P.Y.T. ) and (Lenny Kravitz — Low).
-2 points: slightly lacking in detail.
Mids – 8/10. Detailed and highly resolved. Vocals are pleasant, lacking a bit of transparency. — (Oasis – Wonderwall) and (Michael Jackson – Man in the Mirror).
-2 points: close vocal positioning, little transparency.
High frequencies — 7/10. Bright and overly accentuated. Percussion sounds ringing and in (Oasis – Dont Go Away) the acoustic guitar drowns out the playing of another instrument. And in (Eagles – Hotel California) the acoustic guitar slightly pushes the vocals back at the beginning of the track.
-3 points: overly bright highs.
Detail retrieval — 8/10. Vocals and instruments are clearly heard in the foreground or background. Micro-details like string squeaks or the performer’s breathing are easily audible — (Oasis – Dont Go Away) and (Johnny Cash – Hurt). But on busy tracks, noticeable compression is felt, leaving no breathing room between instruments.
-2 points: sound compression in busy tracks.
Soundstage — 8/10. Wider than your head. The sound is open, with a sense of scale and depth. Excellent separation of vocals and instruments — (Michael Jackson – Man in the Mirror) and (Yosi Horikawa – Bubbles). On busy tracks when 5-6 instruments play at once, it is harder to isolate an individual instrument’s play.
-2 points: weak instrument separation in busy tracks.
Naturalness — 9/10. No artificiality or grain is noticeable in the sound, and instruments are easy to distinguish by ear. At the same time, the sound is slightly colored due to boosted highs. (Sting – Englishman in New York). (Lenny Kravitz — Low).
-1 point: colored sound.
Active noise cancellation (ANC) – 5/10. Suppresses up to 35% of low-frequency noise. There is an adaptive mode.
Transparency mode – 1/10. Not supported.
Battery life — 10/10 (❗️reference). Claimed specs — earbuds up to 6.5 hours of playback and up to 39 hours with the charging case. In reality — up to 7 h 23 min for the earbuds and up to 40 h with the charging case, taking volume and codec into account. There is fast charging — 10 minutes give 2 hours of music playback.
Controls — 5/10 (❗️reference Huawei FreeBuds 6). By pinching the earbud stem. I didn’t like the controls; they’re inconvenient and you have to get used to the pinch force. You can reassign controls in the Xiaomi Earbuds app.
-5 points: inconvenient controls, need to get used to the pinch force.
The app – 10/10. You can download Xiaomi Earbuds for Android and iOS. Inside the app, you can check battery levels, customize controls, use the voice recorder, adjust the sound, and tweak the EQ. The app is user-friendly, with all menu items laid out on a single screen.
Connection stability 10/10 (❗️reference). Indoors, the connection stays rock solid up to 10m using the aptX Adaptive codec. Bluetooth version 5.4.
Overall build score – 8.1/10.
Comfort – 9/10. Secure fit, with minor fatigue after a couple of hours of listening.
Durability – 7.5/10. IP54 dust and water resistance for the earbuds only, solid build quality and materials, and a fingerprint-magnet glossy finish.
Design – 8/10. They look fine, though nothing particularly striking or unique about the design.

Drivers ?

Drivers are the drivers in your headphones that are responsible for creating sound.

DD + PM + BA – means that there are several different types of drivers in these headphones.

DD – “Dynamic Driver” dynamic driver (deep bass, natural sound).

PM – “Planar Magnetic Driver” planar driver (wide soundstage and fast response).

BA – “Balanced Armature Driver” armature driver (accuracy and detail retrieval).

BC – “Bone Conduction Driver” or bone-conduction driver, which transmits vibration to the body of the headphones, transmitting sound through the bone/cartilage to the inner ear.

Codecs ?

LDAC – high quality, high speed (Sony).

SBC is the basic Bluetooth standard, low quality.

AAC – Apple standard, good quality, low latency.

aptX – Qualcomm standard, good quality, low latency.

LC3/LC3plus – new Bluetooth LE Audio codecs, efficient compression.

SoundPEATS Air4 Pro

SoundPEATS Air4 Pro – best TWS earbuds under $45. It’s important that your phone supports the aptX Adaptive codec. These TWS earbuds have a slight bass bias, slightly recessed mids, and a minor lack of highs. Musical engagement is good.

The microphone transmits voice well in quiet conditions and handles noisy environments averagely. Noise cancellation is average. Transparency is good; in most cases, it’s comfortable for conversations. The app is weak in features but exists and offers EQ presets and control remapping. Battery life is weak, which is a downside for a model with noise cancellation and aptX codec; the earbuds last 4 hours, and about 16 hours total with the case. Controls are touch-sensitive and convenient. Earbud comfort is excellent, allowing 3-4 hours of use without discomfort. The design is an acquired taste; I didn’t care for it. The earbuds come in 2 colors.

Microphone – 7/10. In noisy conditions – 6.5/10. In quiet conditions – 7.5/10:

Sound. The earbuds offer a balanced sound signature with an emphasis on the low end, bringing depth and energy to bass-heavy tracks. Mids are expressive enough to handle vocals and key instruments, though complex tracks can feel a bit lacking in transparency. Highs are slightly reined in, which tones down brightness and detail while keeping harshness at bay. Soundstage, naturalness, and detail retrieval are above average—an impressive result given the price tag. These earbuds keep you engaged and work well for casual, everyday listening.

Frequency balance – 7.5/10. Sound leans slightly toward the bass, with somewhat recessed mids and a minor drop in the highs.
Lows 8/10. Bass has body and weight, which really shines on electronic tracks (Madis – Phobos and DeimosBoris Blank – Resonance). That said, on rock and metal tracks (Papa Roach – HelpThe Exies – Ugly), it lacks punch and definition. For hardcore and hip-hop tracks likeOnyx – Slam, you notice a lack of weight and aggression.
Mids – 7.5/10. Mids sound natural and well-balanced on pop and country tracks (Morgan Wallen – Last NightChristopher Cross – Sailing). But on complex arrangements (Skid Row – Wasted TimeHinder – The Life), you occasionally miss some transparency and detail.
Highs – 7/10. They sound smooth, though they sometimes lack clarity and airiness. For instance, onZayn – What I Am and Kings of Leon – Split Screen, this takes away from the overall listening experience.
Detail retrieval – 7.5/10. Good across most genres, shining brightest in electronic and pop music where primary and secondary elements like synths, percussion, and vocals come through clearly. On rock and metal tracks such asSleep Token – Chokehold, the earbuds lose precision during heavy climaxes, where guitar and drum details start to muddy together. All in all, these earbuds suit more laid-back genres and strike a good balance between instruments and vocals, though they can lose clarity on aggressive tracks.
Soundstage – 7/10. The earbuds feature an average soundstage with solid imaging. On busy tracks loaded with instruments, such asFloya – Epiphany or Dayseeker – Sleeptalk, the soundstage width feels somewhat restricted. Vocals can sound a bit congested, like inTeddy Swims – Bad Dreams, where their placement in the mix feels boxed in. There is a sense of virtual space, and the earbuds manage to project width, though it falls short on dense musical layers.
Natural timbre – 7/10. On the track Michael Jackson – Man in the Mirror , vocals come through expressively, but the drum cymbals lack natural bite and overtone richness. In Judas Priest – Living After Midnight , the guitars sound full, yet shakers and minor background details get slightly lost in the main mix. The earbuds lack texture and precision when reproducing micro-details.
Musical engagement 6.5/10. The earbuds hold your attention, without sparking a strong urge to tap your foot or sit through entire albums. The sound is balanced, but an excessive bass emphasis sometimes undercuts overall cohesion and emotional immersion. These earbuds work well as background listening companions. If you are after full immersion and an emotional connection, you might find yourself wanting more dynamics and a wider soundstage.

Samsung Galaxy Buds FE

Samsung Galaxy Buds FE ($49) are excellent budget noise-cancelling earbuds if you have a Galaxy phone, as the proprietary Samsung Scalable Codec (SSC) provides a +10-15% boost to sound quality.

Microphone – 7/10. In noisy conditions – 6.5/10. In quiet conditions – 7.5/10:

0:00
0:00
Reasons to buy:
  • Good microphone in quiet environments
  • Comfortable fit.
Reasons not to buy:
  • Balanced sound
  • No widely supported high-quality codec

Sound. These earbuds are a compromise between price and features (including noise cancellation). They are ideal for Samsung ecosystem users, but won’t satisfy picky audiophiles who prioritize a detailed sound signature. The sound profile leans low-frequency, prioritizing musicality over analytical precision. The earbuds manage to hold your attention. Lows are pleasant, well-controlled, and dominant. Mids are slightly masked by the low end, yet vocals don’t feel distant—the singer feels right there with you. Highs are grainy with a noticeable lack of presence.

Frequency balance – 6.5/10. The frequency balance on the Galaxy Buds FE is unstable. Lows are frequently over-accentuated. This negatively impacts how mids and highs are perceived, cutting into their clarity and detail. On bass-heavy tracks, you get an imbalance where the bass overpowers the rest of the frequency spectrum. Simpler tracks feature a more even balance, with lows only occasionally spilling over.
Lows – 7/10. The character of the low end changes depending on the track. On heavy bass anthems like Papa Roach – “Help” and Pendulum – “Napalm”, the bass sometimes lacks punch and depth, reducing immersion. In other cases, such as Skid Row – “Wasted Time” and Slam & Onyx – “Shut ‘Em Down”, the low end turns boomy and uncontrolled, leading to distortion and mud. On better-balanced tracks like Morgan Wallen – “Last Night” and Madis – “Phobos and Deimos”, the bass is present, but its weight doesn’t always deliver a true sense of physical impact.
Mids – 6.5/10. Mids often struggle with a lack of transparency and instrument separation. On dense arrangements like Hinder – “The Life”, Judas Priest – “Living After Midnight”, and The Exies – “Ugly”, the midrange feels cramped, turning busy climaxes into a muddy wall of sound and sapping vocal clarity. On simpler pop and electronic tracks like Becky Hill – “Linger” and Boris Blank – “Resonance”, the mids sound cleaner and deliver a greater sense of presence and detail, though even here complex moments can blur slightly.
High frequencies – 6/10. Highs on the Galaxy Buds FE lack consistent detail. This is particularly noticeable on tracks like Papa Roach – «Help» and Skid Row – «Wasted Time», where the highs get buried beneath the other instruments. On songs like Within Temptation – «All I Need» and Michael Jackson – «Man In the Mirror», highs fail to fully open up, dragging down overall sound detail.
Detail retrieval – 6/10. Sound detail on the Galaxy Buds FE leaves much to be desired, especially in denser arrangements and layered tracks like Epica – «Cry for the Moon» and Sleep Token – «Chokehold». Primary sounds like drums, bass guitar, guitars, and vocals often get lost in complex passages. Secondary elements, such as background synths, shakers, and tambourines, aren’t always distinct either. Tertiary details, like an artist breathing or fingers sliding on guitar strings, go practically unnoticed.
Soundstage – 6/10. The soundstage feels restricted, playing out more “inside your head” than projecting space around you. On busy tracks like The Chemical Brothers – “Galvanize”, instrument placement lacks distinct separation. On simpler cuts like Becky Hill – “Linger” and Madis – “Phobos and Deimos”, the soundstage widens a bit, but it still fails to create a fully immersive environment.
Natural timbre – 6/10. Naturalness is limited, particularly in the timbre of instruments like drum cymbals (sounding more like tin than metal), shakers and tambourines (lacking a “sandy” and lifelike texture), and acoustic guitar strings (sounding flat and lacking overtones).
Musical engagement 6/10. Due to all these factors combined, engagement often falls short. On dynamic, complex tracks like Michael Jackson – “Man In the Mirror” and Kings of Leon – “Split Screen”, the earbuds fail to draw you in. It feels more like passive background listening than active engagement. The urge to bob your head or spin whole albums rarely hits, leaving you feeling mostly neutral or indifferent. Better engagement shines through on simpler pop tracks like Becky Hill – “Linger” and Miss Monique – “Look At Me” thanks to a cleaner balance and dynamics, though even there full immersion remains out of reach.
